Call for Applications: IUMS Member Society Research Excellence Award (BISMiS Nomination)
The Bergey’s International Society for Microbial Systematics (BISMiS) invites applications for the IUMS Member Society Research Excellence Award, to be presented at the upcoming International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS) Congress.
This award recognises outstanding early- to mid-career researchers making significant and original contributions to microbiology and provides an international platform to highlight emerging leaders in the field. The selected nominee will represent BISMiS in the scientific programme of the IUMS Congress, providing visibility for both the researcher and the Society at this international meeting.
Eligible members are warmly encouraged to apply, and self-applications are welcome.

Award Overview
Each IUMS Member Society may nominate one candidate.
IUMS will select up to six awardees to present their research in a dedicated award session at the Congress.
Awardees will receive:
- Complimentary registration for the IUMS Congress (covered by IUMS)
- Formal recognition as an IUMS Member Society Research Excellence Awardee
- An invited oral presentation at the Congress (for selected awardees)
- In accordance with the decision of the BISMiS Executive Board, BISMiS will provide financial support of up to USD 2,000 to cover travel and accommodation expenses for the BISMiS nominee if selected by IUMS.
Eligibility
Applicant must:
- Be within 15 years post-PhD (career interruptions will be considered)
- Have been a BISMiS member for at least one year (current members since 2025 or earlier)
- Be able to attend and present in person at the IUMS Congress
Application Materials
Applicant should submit:
- Completed BISMiS Application Form
- Curriculum Vitae (maximum 4 pages)
- Research Summary (maximum 1 page)
- Proposed presentation title and abstract, and IUMS abstract submission number (once submitted)

- The BISMiS Executive Board will review applications and nominate one candidate to IUMS before the official deadline of 29 April 2026.
